我在公司服務近20年,隨著職位升遷,工作上愈來愈常需要使用英文與國外同事或客戶作溝通; 雖然公司的同事每個都是大學甚至是研究所畢業的學歷,但是能看到外國人就開口說侃侃而談的人只有極少數,大部分的人遇到需要溝通的時候就躲起來用e-mail溝通,這樣的態度與口說能力明顯地阻擋了他們的升遷管道,在我的觀察中,台灣學生目前所處的英語學習環境,偏重的是閱讀、字彙以及考試的作答能力,家長也認為看到絕對分數的進步才算是好的學習成果,但這樣的學習結果無法運用在工作上,一旦遇上需要和國外客戶或同事溝通的情形,往往因為聽不懂或不敢說而止步,工作因此無法完成,只好轉交給英文能力較好的同事負責,這是表現機會的損失,自然會影響升遷;值得注意的是,在目前這個高度國際化的環境下,愈來愈多公司將英文能力作為升遷的必要條件之一,這也是我們需要認清的孩子們未來的挑戰. Phil是我的外甥,一年半前,他是個功課很重的8年級的學生,在我的建議下開始加入Scott的英語線上課程,在這一年半的課程中,Phil在英文的聽力理解以及口說表達能力上有非常明顯的進步,我可以清楚地觀察到他與外國老師溝通時展現的自信,更重要的是這樣的線上課程對他的英文考試能力也有相對的提昇效果,就在剛公布的高中會考結果中,Phil考上了第一志願高中,而其英文成績更是亮眼. 雖然升上高中之後功課會更繁重,但我仍強烈建議Phil要持續參加英語線上課程,因為每週二次的課程其實沒有花掉Phil太多時間,但就在這二個小時的投資裡,Phil可以持續在愉快的氣氛在進行課程,增加他的英文聽說能力,沒有考試壓力抺殺學習熱情,我相信對於英文學習而言,這是一條正確的路.

Lily, my daughter, took this class for two years in vocabulary and critical reading. This online class helped her a lot. Lily was in a German public school for her 5th grade and studied English only as a second language. In sixth grade, she learned almost nothing due to the change in her learning environment and unique teaching habits of her new English teacher. In seventh grade, she was able to slowly catch up to her classmates and finally in eighth grade, I signed her up for Mr. Dreyer’s online classes. I believe Mr. Dreyer’s classes helped her catch up what she missed while in Germany as she is now in English Honors.
