Recently I taught one of our Advanced Writing classes–the students attend the prestigious school in the Hsinchu, Taiwan Science Park where I taught from 1992-1997. The students have been working on description essays. So, as homework, I gave them this prompt:

Describe what it is like to attend a writing class with DreyerCoaching.com.

Learning and practicing English with DreyerCoaching has significantly improved my grammar and the ability to produce more lucid, advanced writing. Through the years of taking DreyerCoaching classes, I recognize that my English skills have escalated into a much higher level. Though improving English is the main benefit of taking this class, there is much more. Being able to learn with sophisticated and qualified teachers without the need of leaving your house, being able to connect to the teachers anywhere and anytime, and being able to personally have conversation with the CEO of the online class are boons of DreyerCoaching that most other extracurricular classes do not offer. During the classes, students are free to ask questions at any time, and the classes are relaxing because the teachers are friendly and convivial. Because there is little stress when taking the class, students (for example, me) enjoy it and can learn more effectively. In conclusion, taking DreyerCoaching is the right choice and I encourage everyone who has a chance to take the class to apply for it.

Usually, to learn English in Taiwan, one would have to leave their house and drive for at least ten minutes to arrive at the designated teaching location. However, with DreyerCoaching, it is incredibly convenient; turn on your laptop, connect to the meeting, and you are all set! The learning experience is entirely different with DreyerCoaching compared to the average extracurricular class. Usually, when people think of English classes in Taiwan, they think of cram schools, tutoring, or other conventional methods of teaching. However, DreyerCoaching has ways of teaching English that are entirely different. Not only does it utilize the technology of the 21st century by teaching over the internet, it provides a further reach of the services it offers, and allows more diversity in students and teachers alike. Along with that, DreyerCoaching also offers interesting and engaging topics to teach the students. For example, students can write their own pourquoi stories, learn about what happens on the ocean floor, and create historical narratives. These topics allow students to engage, therefore making learning more enjoyable. During the classes, students also improve their writing by discussing sentence structure, vocabulary, and grammar. Students can go over their writing in class with individualized attention, making it a wonderful learning environment for students.

 In an advanced writing class, we have been working on Compare and Contrast essays. I assigned the students this topic:

 

Compare and Contrast DreyerCoaching vs. Other Language Programs.

 

As a student who has attended DreyerCoaching for countless years, I have found that this online class is completely different from other English teaching programs in multiple aspects. The teaching styles differ drastically not only between institutions but also between teachers of the same organization. However, there are innumerable distinct features that differentiate DreyerCoaching from other language programs, possibly making DreyerCoaching one of the most unique out there. Of course, online classes have benefits as well as drawbacks, but traditional classes, in my opinion, have potentially fewer merits, especially in the times of COVID-19. 

 

First, learning and practicing English with DreyerCoaching is much more effective than most traditional cram school classes because the students can not only receive individual attention but also build a close relationship with the teachers. Most cram school classes have students by the tens and hundreds. First, the physical distance of students at the back row seats weakens the bonds between these students and the instructor. Second, the large number of students present in a crowded space creates this tension or pressure that discourages students to vocalize their opinions or questions. In DreyerCoaching, however, the teachers are all amiable. In addition to the smaller number of students, the capability of having direct eye contact with the teacher adds to the convivial atmosphere DreyerCoaching offers. 

 

Second, since students of DreyerCoaching receive individual attention, the teachers can modify the classes based on the students’ needs, which most classes cannot do. For example, our classes with Mr. Dreyer follow the AP Language and Composition curriculum at our school. Mr. Dreyer, knowing that we were learning about rhetorical analysis at school, provided additional practice assignments for us such as Lincoln’s Thanksgiving essay and Dreyer’s “Why I Kissed Twitter Goodbye.” Most other classes have rigid class schedules, and oftentimes, teachers are prohibited from modifying the content. This can have both strengths and weaknesses. Since the class content is fixed, one can expect the pacing of the class. However, in the same sense, if a person cannot keep up with the courses, and teachers cannot slow down to help the students, then taking the classes would be ineffective. This ties back to another aspect that proves why DreyerCoaching is more beneficial.

 

Lastly, DreyerCoaching gives bonus classes!!! Think about how many extracurricular classes you have attended throughout your life. Do most of them offer bonus classes in addition to discounts on tuition? The likely answer is no. DreyerCoaching is not only unique in this way, but the bonus courses themselves are also distinctive. Some bonus classes are extensions of the original course, while others provide exclusive content on fascinating topics such as student life in America and reptiles. As a Taiwanese who experienced attending numerous extracurricular English programs, it is safe to say that DreyerCoaching is the only teaching organization out of all the ones I took that do grant countless free classes not just for signing up classes early but also to celebrate holidays.

 

Is DreyerCoaching a better English program than all others that are available? The answer may vary from person to person. In my opinion, however, I do think DreyerCoaching holds many merits that other language programs do not offer. Especially during the times of COVID-19, when staying in public places poses danger, online classes become a better option than the traditional classes with physical classrooms. Another benefit of its learning style is the different people that are able to be connected. With teachers and students scattered all across the world, the experiences and lifestyles of everyone are different, and allows those who would usually not meet or talk face-to-face to do so. English is a universal language — it is a tool of communication. With fluency in it, one would be able to share and connect with hundreds of millions of people around the world. In places where English is not the primary language, such as Taiwan, it may be difficult to come by a tutor who can accurately tailor English lessons to one’s abilities. After years of trying to increase my English proficiency in Taiwan outside of the general English requirements in high school, DreyerCoaching has truly fulfilled my standards as a well-developed language program. 

 

A question I often ask myself when engaging in a particular activity is: “Is this worth my time?” As a current junior who has immense workloads both within and out of school, I greatly value my time — wasting time is not an option. At the beginning of the school year, the instructor  will specifically ask students for their input on what they believe their strengths and weaknesses are. Through this, the DreyerCoaching teacher is able to maximize the efficiency of the short one-hour class per week by directing teaching and emphasis based on students’ needs. A personal example of this is when our class reflected that we could use some help on rhetorical analysis essays, and so the instructor assigned extra work for us to practice and sharpen our analysis abilities. While this added to our workload, this assignment was worthwhile as Mr. Dreyer carefully gave us constructive feedback after each essay. This is especially different from how other language programs operate. Sure, we may get extra work to sharpen our abilities; however, most programs just give us a score on the paper without spending time going over what worked and what did not. 

 

Moreover, DreyerCoaching adds to our knowledge in American history, politics, and current events. At the beginning of each class, while waiting for everyone to log on to Zoom, the instructor would tell us about what is going on around the world. While it may be bits and pieces, but with all the mini-sessions combined, we have become more culturally and globally aware. Again, this is something that does not seem to exist in other language programs. Most force you to read textbooks and memorize words, a tiring way to learn English. 

 

DreyerCoaching is about meaningful learning, not just memorizing to learn. What is also truly special is that all of this is accessible with just a computer — it is completely online! With a limited amount of time to spare, DreyerCoaching encapsulates the needs of students while maintaining an engaging structure for them to learn.
