Amazing! Lucy is a high school student in Beijing, China, now in her second year with DreyerCoaching.

In early 2021, she entered an English speech competition against 380,000 (!) other contestants from all across China! From that 380,000, she advanced to a round against 900 others, then as a semi-finalist in a group of only 12, and finally, she WON by getting into the final six! Think about that! Out of a country of 1.4 billion, Lucy placed herself among the VERY BEST in English! Congratulations, Lucy! We are so proud of you and your accomplishments!

This is her story. (Scroll down for the original Chinese she wrote.)

Before joining Mr. Dreyer’s class with DreyerCoaching.com, I had a hard time understanding long and difficult sentences in English, and I did not know enough authentic, real-life American oral expressions. Whenever I read English literature or novels, I always came across some long, complicated sentences that slowed down my reading speed and hindered my comprehension. When I would speak with teachers or students in English during and after class, my spoken English was also rather stiff and unnatural.

So, I signed up for Mr. Dreyer’s advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension course, which has benefited me greatly. Dreyer’s classes are very different from other kinds of language programs. Each class can only have up to six students maximum. These small class sizes allow each student to fully express his or her opinions, and let the teacher help the students improve to the greatest extent possible.

My favorite part of these classes, and what I think is the most distinctive part, comes at the end of each class session. Right before we finish each time, Dreyer asks us, “What is one thing you learned today?” Although we may pick just one proverb or a new word we learned, this practice helps us mentally review all the content we studied that day and consolidate the new information in our mind. This is a practice that no other cram schools do or offer their students.

This year I participated in the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) Cup National English Literacy Competition for Middle School Students. This year, more than 380,000 students signed up. In the first round of the national finals held on February 6, 2021, a total of nearly 900 contestants from across the country participated. The competition included paragraph reading, impromptu speeches, and prepared speeches. I was able to answer all the questions with accurate, fluent, and authentic English while behind the microphone, and responded with ease. This was largely due to the instructive teaching Mr. Dreyer has given me over the past two years. My reading, speaking, and all other skills have been extensively improved.

After the 900 students competed, I earned a spot among the top twelve finalists from across the whole country and the only one from the Beijing region. I have successfully advanced to the final round that will choose the national champion, runner-up, and third-place winner. I am proud to have achieved such results, and I am also very grateful to Mr. Dreyer for his teaching. It is precisely thanks to such an effective, highly-efficient, and interesting class that my English level can be so improved to this level!

Scott’s thoughts:

  1. Wow! This is amazing! When Lucy came to DreyerCoaching in 2019, she was already ambitious and highly self-motivated. When I first met Lucy, I was impressed that she actually enjoyed participating in English speech contests. Most people hate and fear public speaking in their native language, let alone in a second language, so Lucy’s hobby was remarkable in itself. What she has accomplished so far in the FLTRP competition is nothing less than incredible.
  2. Think of the numbers. Her competition began with 380,000 contestants from across China, a nation of some 1.4 billion souls. To put that in perspective, my hometown of Roanoke, Virginia–the largest city in the western two-thirds of the state–has 99,000 people. So, Lucy’s initial competitors numbered about four times the size of my hometown. The finalists numbering only 900 is a tiny figure, out of a country the size of China. Then, she advanced to a group of only 12, and finally WON by getting into the WINNERS CIRCLE of only six! What an incredible accomplishment!
  3. For years I have heard that, since Beijing is the capital of China with some 21 million residents, it boasts many of the best teachers, schools, and educational resources in the country. For Lucy to have reached the final twelve and be the only contestant from Beijing is also phenomenal. (For reference, the US state of Virginia has some 8.6 million residents, so the city of Beijing has some two and a half times the population of Virginia.)
  4. Since DreyerCoaching teaches English classes via online, the very same quality instruction that Lucy enjoys is also available to you or your child, anywhere in the world. Are you in a smaller city in China or elsewhere in Asia? Or on a small island like Guam or elsewhere in Micronesia? Or are you in a suburb in California, North Carolina, or another US state? How about Europe, India, South America, Africa, or the Middle East? By using the internet, we can come right into your home or office and be your personal guide to better English, the same way we are Lucy’s guide! You have what it takes, and we can help you!

Most people do not know how to help their children or themselves with English, so we created an online school that helps students learn with experienced, American teachers in a safe, convenient, affordable way at their home or office.
