There are many cases where the Chinese language has one word for something but English has more than one, and vice versa. For example, as explained in this post, the English words “shade” and “shadow” have quite different meanings, but are often both translated into Chinese as 影子 (Ying tze).
Likewise, the phrases “most people” and “most of the people” are similar, but you generally use them in different ways. However, they are usually translated in Chinese one way, as 大部分的人 (Dà bùfèn de rén). This problem area came to my attention while I was helping some DreyerCoaching writing students last week, and I realized it can cause trouble for non-native speakers. So, let’s take a look at how both phrases are different and when to use them.
Most People:
You normally use this in the general, broadest sense, as when referring to “humanity” or “mankind.” For example:
- Most people, regardless of which country they live in, want the same things: happiness, good health, a comfortable standard of living, peace, and meaningful relationships.
- Most people would rather see a smile than a frown.
- Most people will experience setbacks and disappointments at various times of their lives. Therefore, developing resilience is key.
Most of the People:
In contrast, you usually use this when referring to a specific group or narrower range of folks. Some sample sentences:
- Most of the people who came to the party brought a gift.
- Most of the people in that neighborhood are retired.
- I knew most of the people at the wedding, but not everyone.
- Most of the people in the photo at the top of this post are wearing white and red.
Not to make this more complicated, but we should point out that there is no specific, “black and white” number of people causing you to use “of the” or not. For example, in cases where there is a specific range of folks, but that number is very large, the “of the” may be optional. For example, both of these sentences work:
- Most people in America speak English.
- Most of the people in America speak English.
This is because, the USA has some 330 million residents, so yes, you are referring to a specific population. However, that pool is also enormous.
Likewise, these two sentences both work also:
- Most people who go to the beach wear sunscreen.
- Most of the people who go to the beach wear sunscreen.
Again, beachgoers are a specific set of individuals. However, they are a large group, spread out across the globe.
Oftentimes with English, or any language, much of it comes down to “ear.” That is to say, it is a matter of what sounds or looks right. Since languages are created and changed by people and not machines, there are many “gray areas.” This is another reason why it is wise to have a native speaker be your personal guide to learning a new language.
