What is a Mastermind?
It is a popular tool for personal growth. There are a variety of formats based on the wide variety of mastermind groups. However, in general, most groups read a book together on the same schedule, answer questions based on the text and content, and then discuss their insights together. The benefit is based on the idea of synergy: that is, the sum of the whole is greater than all the individual parts. Bringing sharp minds together to read and discuss a book will produce more growth than individuals all reading it alone.
In his 1937 classic Think and Grow Rich, author Napoleon Hill claimed: “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony…no two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible tangible force, which may be likened to a third mind, in this case, the Mastermind.”
As motivational speaker Tony Robbins put it, “The central concept is to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who have what you’d like to create if you haven’t.”
What book will we study?
We will be reading the highly-acclaimed Atomic Habits by James Clear. The core idea is, since so much of our life and behavior is habitual, then if we intentionally develop good habits, those will gradually help make us better people.
How does it work?
Our Mastermind 1.0 group will meet from 9:00-9:50 Thursday nights (China Standard Time; Thursday mornings USA time) on zoom so anyone from anywhere in the world can join, from home or office. Our group will provide you with an excellent peer group and Scott Dreyer will moderate. You will get a reading assignment for each week, with guiding questions, insights, and vocabulary to match each passage. You will do that reading and thinking during the week at your own pace, and we will come together to discuss and grow in our group.
Who is it for?
It is for highly-motivated individuals who are committed to personal growth and development. Participants must have excellent reading and conversation skills in English. To ensure a high-level English environment, participants must pass an interview to be admitted. Applicants must be in high school grade 11 or above. This is also excellent for university students and career people.
How will it help me?
This experience is designated to help you improve your reading, writing, vocabulary, discussion, public speaking, and critical thinking skills in a holistic way. Moreover, by improving your competence, you will also improve your confidence that will help you for further success in college, career, and life. If you ever plan to study or work in the US or another English-speaking country, this experience will help prepare you for success in a culture that values reading, dialogue, and group projects. Lastly, it will give you an intimate knowledge of one of the most popular books today in the business and personal growth space.
Dreyer has been teaching full-time since 1987, and he has clearly seen in classrooms in both the US and Asia: students who have a habit of reading always far outperform those who do not.
A key aspect of any Mastermind group is, ultimately your growth does not depend on how much the book, moderator, or your peers put in. Instead, success depends mainly on how much you choose to put in and take from the experience.
When will it be?
Thursdays, from 9:00-9:50 pm, China Standard Time, (Thursdays 9:00-9:50 am USA Eastern Time) from April 7-July 28, 2022 (16 sessions).
Why is it called Mastermind 1.0?
This is DreyerCoaching’s inaugural Mastermind group. Our plan is to start a Mastermind 2.0 in the fall with a new book, plus start offering literature-based Mastermind groups for students with basic and intermediate English levels in the future.
What is the time commitment?
In addition to our group that will run 50-60 minutes each Thursday night, plan on about 1-3 hours per week of writing, answering questions, and journaling. The exact amount of time required will depend on your English level and also how deeply you choose to go.
Who will be my personal guide?
Scott Dreyer is a trilingual American who graduated from the prestigious College of William and Mary, established in 1693, the second-oldest university in the US. (That is the college that US President and author of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson graduated from.) Dreyer has been a licensed teacher since 1987, earned National Teacher Board Certification (which fewer than 3% of US teachers have), has traveled to over 30 counties, has been helping Chinese speakers improve their English since 1989, wrote and published an award-winning book Write Like a Champion in 2007, and has owned his online teaching business since 2008.
