Malcolm Gladwell in his bestselling book Outliers said it takes about 10,000 hours to be a phenom at something. A phenom is a person who is amazingly expert and talented at doing something. (It’s where we get the word “phenomenal” from.)
In other words, to be incredibly great at something, you have to invest lots of time into it. This is why we tell our students, “learning a new language is a long-term process. There is no shortcut.” It is also why, at DreyerCoaching, we only invite veteran teachers with years of experience to join our team.
Recently Mr. Woodson and I had lunch with Mrs. Rosenbaum to celebrate her 50th year teaching! A person needs to teach full-time about ten or eleven years to reach 10,000 hours of teaching. And Mrs. Rosenbaum has done that about five times now! No wonder so many of her students learn English so well and keep coming back to take her classes.
