Summer Camp 2017

In the year 2000, the Dreyers helped host their first Summer Camp for Chinese-speaking students to visit the USA. More recently, we have hosted students in the summers of 2013, 2014, and 2015, and we are looking forward to providing a camp in the summer of 2017!

Where will it be?

In the Roanoke Valley, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of the US State of Virginia. (See map)

Who can attend?

Campers must be at least 11 years old as of 6/30/2017, and a maximum of 17 years old by 6/30/2017  (For other ages, contact Scott to arrange an alternative program.)

What is included? 

  • Round-trip Airfare from Beijing or Taipei, to Washington DC
  • Accommodations for 24 nights; some with US host family, some at a residential camp
  • Residential camp with 3 meals per day, stay in cabin, and full range of outdoor activities (2 weeks for grades 6-7, 1 week for grades 8-11)
  • Week of Leadership Camp for grades 8-11 (Based on the bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens--book included)
  • English classes to help students with listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary
  • A full-immersion English environment
  • All breakfasts, dinners, and most lunches unless noted

What will I need to bring?

  • comfortable clothes for 5-6 days, for temperatures around 30-35 C (you can do laundry here)
  • light jacket (it can get cool at night, and it is 12 C in the cave)
  • comfortable shoes for playing sports and hiking (2 pair in case wet from rain)
  • notebook and pen for things you learn
  • Personal hygiene items: toothbrush & toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. 
  • sunscreen, sunglasses, hat
  • cell phone & charger (To help you "unplug" and enjoy the outdoor experience and your friends, campers will leave their phones and listening devices with the host family during the week/s at camp. This is the camp's policy.)
  • swimsuit (girls: modest 1-piece;  boys: modest trunks, not speedos) & 2 towels
  • spending money (We suggest $200-300; there is a safe box here to keep some of your extra money safe)
  • For camp: sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight, raingear, camp-appropriate clothing, long pants (for horseback riding)
  • Please mark all belongings with your English name with a permanent marker

Rising grade 6 - 7 students: RMB 39,330* / NT$ 176,700*

Rising grade 8-11 students: RMB 44,500* / NT$ 199,950*

* Round-trip air travel from Beijing or Taipei to and from Washington Dulles Airport, 13-18 days of family accommodation, 5-10 days of camping, travel to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, all classes, and 2-3 meals per day.
