That student is exactly right, and her teacher taught her well! In fact, other than my book&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"about\/scotts-book\">Write Like a Champion<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;(p. 90), I am not aware of any other books that mention this little nugget of language learning. I often tell my students, &#8220;Many things in Chinese and English you cannot translate directly.&#8221; &#8220;Phenomenon&#8221; is one word that DOES have a direct translation in Chinese (\u73b0\u8c61); however, the USAGE is different.&nbsp; &nbsp;Basically, Chinese uses this word often, while English uses it rarely. Again, in English, it usually refers to some odd happening that is rare and amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/simpleview\/image\/upload\/c_fill,f_auto,h_388,q_65,w_560\/v1\/clients\/norway\/northern_lights_lyngenfjord_northern_norway_nav_d3ffe4a3-bde9-4ffa-8a1c-a42b84c60681.jpg\">The Northern Lights<\/a> are a remarkable phenomenon that we almost never see in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.best-place-to-retire.com\/images\/places-to-retire-in-southern-usa.jpg\">the Southern US<\/a>, because they normally occur near the North Pole.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-245859\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/northern-lights-1250561_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"northern lights 1250561 960 720\" width=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/northern-lights-1250561_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/northern-lights-1250561_960_720-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 960px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Twins are rather rare, but having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox5ny.com\/news\/twins-one-white-and-one-black-start-middle-school\">one white and one black<\/a>, is a truly remarkable phenomenon, as is the case of these twin sisters in England.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, this word is commonly used and heard in Chinese. So, when Chinese speakers speak English, they might say things like:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I feel frustrated when I lose my keys. Have you ever had that phenomenon before? (Sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/core-concepts\/avoid-chinglish\/\">Chinglish<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s better to say, &#8220;I feel frustrated when I lost my keys. Has that ever happened to you before?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>************************<\/p>\n<p>The same is true with the word &#8220;comfortable.&#8221; This word also has a direct translation in Chinese (\u8212\u670d). There is also a direct translation for &#8220;feel comfortable&#8221; (\u611f\u89c9\u8212\u670d). However, like &#8220;phenemenon,&#8221; this word is used more in Chinese than in English, and it is used in more contexts in Chinese than in English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In English, it is USUALLY used to describe a PHYSICAL state of feeling relaxed and pleasant.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This new sofa is really comfortable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-245860\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/comfortable-cat.jpg\" alt=\"comfortable cat\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The students don&#8217;t like the wooden chairs in their classroom; they are too uncomfortable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; It can also describe an emotional state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;I feel uncomfortable when the boss keeps staring at me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;&nbsp;I don&#8217;t feel comfortable asking to borrow too many things from my friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Chinese, though, it is often used in a way relating to health or illness. So, here a Chinese speaker in English might say:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My stomach feels uncomfortable, so I&#8217;ll have to miss school today. (Sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/core-concepts\/avoid-chinglish\/\">Chinglish<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-245861\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/11064976153_b869ccdd31.jpg\" alt=\"11064976153 b869ccdd31\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Americans would probably say instead: My stomach doesn&#8217;t feel well, so I&#8217;ll have to miss school today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OR&nbsp; &nbsp;I have a stomachache, so I&#8217;ll have to miss school today.<\/p>\n<p>OR&nbsp; &nbsp;My stomach doesn&#8217;t feel well, so I&#8217;ll have to miss school today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My body feels uncomfortable. I want to see a doctor. (Sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/dreyercoaching.com\/beardeddragonmedia\/core-concepts\/avoid-chinglish\/\">Chinglish<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(In this case too, &#8220;body&#8221; is a word that is used more in Chinese (\u8eab\u4f53) than in English.) Americans would probably say the above sentence as:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don&#8217;t feel well. I want to see a doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>OR&nbsp; &nbsp; I feel sick. I want to see a doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>**********************<\/p>\n<p>So, learning a foreign language is funny. Some things you can translate directly, and some you can&#8217;t. And some words that CAN be translated directly, are used more often or rarely in different languages, and in different contexts.<\/p>\n<p>The upshot?
