There is a BUNCH of idioms<\/a> that start with “hit,” so we’ll “hit” another one in this post:
<\/em><\/p>\n

Hit the Bottle<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Meaning<\/strong>: to drink alcohol, especially too much<\/p>\n

Here are some sample sentences, most of which were created by our online students.<\/p>\n

He always hits the bottle so one day he caused a traffic accident.<\/p>\n

(This sentence uses passive voice, but we prefer active voice in English. So, we revised it to be: He always hits the bottle so one day he caused a traffic accident.)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Uncle Ned lost his job and hit the bottle as a result. Sadly, that made things worse.<\/p>\n

John tried to to hit the bottle because he hit rock bottom. However, it was useless. (Note the use of TWO “hit” idioms: “hit rock bottom”)<\/p>\n

Billy is an alcoholic; he has been hitting the bottle since he was 18. <em>(Use a semi-colon, because the first and last parts of this sentence can stand alone. So, they need a semi-colon to join them together.)<\/p>\n

My uncle hits the bottle everyday, and I always tell him to stop drinking, but he can’t stop.<\/p>\n

Joey hit the bottle after losing his house, job, and kids to a fire; fortunately he joined Alcoholics Anonymous.<\/p>\n

After Eric hit the bottle, it was lucky that he didn’t cause a lot of troubles.<\/p>\n
